Training Philosophy Here at Dan's Elite Dog Training, we wont try to double talk you with a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo that sounds interesting, but has very little to do with helping you to train the dog you always wanted.We believe in time honored methods based on both praise and corrections. If training is done correctly we believe most problems can be solved in ten weeks or less. We also believe that it is our job as well as our responsibility to help you have a dog who is a responsible family member, not an after thought doomed to a life of frustration chained in the backyard. The key to good long lasting obedience is not treats, clickers, toys or high pitched voices exhorting our dog to please do what we ask! The key to long lasting obedience is based on a methodology of both praise and corrections. We want to teach the behavior and then give the dog responsibility for the new skill he's learned .When properly done you can expect a life with your dog where you have the ability to not only have your dog not get into the garbage, jump on you or drag you down the street, but also a dog who is able to walk calmly at your side regardless of distractions both on and off leash. What do we teach your dog? All of the skills we teach your dog are based on the American Kennel Club's standards for what a dog trained to a companion dog level should be capable of doing. These skills are as listed: Heel: This is when your dog is walking calmly next to you both on and off leash. He should be able to walk at a normal pace, slow pace and a fast pace. He should be attentive enough to make turns along with you while not getting in your way and he should sit next to you any time you come to a stop Stand for Exam: This exercise is accomplished when your dog is able to stand still off leash while being groomed, bathed, examined by your vet or dried off after coming in out of the rain. Recall: The recall is really the come command. This is a formal command where your dog is taught to come right to you and politely sit in front of you waiting for your next request. Finish: Once your dog is politely sitting in front of you after the recall, the finish command is used to request the dog to move into the heel position. Sit Stay: This skill is self explanatory. When your dog finishes Dan's Elite Dog Training he will be able to hold at least a one minute off leash sit stay. The AKC standard calls for one minute. Generally we expect a much longer sit stay I like to get at least a three minute sit stay Down Stay: The AKC asks for a three minutes down stay, we like to be able to show at least a five minute down stay. All of the skills listed above will be taught to your dog in a manner that your dog is sure to understand and accomplish with reliability each and every time you ask him to. Done properly these skills will also give your dog the tools to behave properly when not in any sort of command. Just think, no more canine redecorating! Right now Dan's Elite Dog Training features group sessions, private lessons, and limited board and training packages. Courses are ten weeks long and all require specific commitments from you. The private lessons are done once weekly where Dan will go over the previous weeks lesson and then move on to the next weeks lesson. Expect to be with Dan for at least an hour for each lesson. Dan requests you be able to work with your dog for ten weeks forty-five minutes a day. Board and Training is similar to the private lessons except your dog will live with Dan for the duration of the course. You will be given a reading list as well other assignments while your dog is away at boarding school. In addition Dan asks that you come out several times to practice with your dog the skills you both are learning. When the dog graduates from the boarding part of the course Dan asks that you practice for a few weeks and meet for several follow-though sessions to assure that you and your dog are off to a good start.
